Perlis Police Chief Datuk Mohamad Abdul Halim said that the police received intelligence at 2pm on April 30 that there was a suspicious boat at the mouth of the Sungai Perlis River, believed to be carrying drugs.
The boat in question was an unregistered red, blue and white fiber fishing boat equipped with a Yamaha Enduro 30 horsepower engine.
The boat had no registration number.
He said that the police then conducted a two-hour surveillance operation at the location and found that no one was entering or leaving the location of the boat. The police then conducted an inspection and found several boxes of drugs suspected to be marijuana on the boat.
"During the search, the police seized a total of 24 cartons, which contained 409 compressed blocks, each weighing about 1 kilogram, all believed to be compressed marijuana.
He pointed out that according to the intelligence of the local fishermen community, the boat did not belong to local fishermen and was not registered. It was suspected that a criminal group disguised itself as a fishing boat for smuggling operations. The police suspected that the boat had been anchored for more than 1 day, waiting for a third party to come and pick up and transport drugs to other states.

“According to intelligence, these drugs are believed to have originated from neighboring countries including Thailand, Laos or Myanmar, and were planned to be transferred to the southern part of the country through Perlis, or even shipped to other countries.”
Mohammad Abdul Halim said the drugs were then taken back to the Perlis Port Police Station for further investigation.
He said the case is currently being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
