Vishnu’s mother, Saiwei (56 years old), revealed that the new medicine her son is currently taking costs RM7,650 for just one month’s use, but the family’s only source of income is her husband’s monthly salary of around RM3,000. How can they afford the treatment costs?
"After Vishnu was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2017, he took a drug, but it didn't work. When he took a shower, his legs would suddenly cramp and he would feel dizzy. He couldn't do sports or stay in hot weather for long, so he stopped going to school for half a year before continuing his Form 5 studies.
"Last October, the doctor asked Vishnu to try a new medicine, and his condition improved after taking it. The only problem is that the medicine is too expensive, and the existing medicine can only last until March 28."
She said that after graduating from university, Vishnu tried to work and earn income, but was soon fired by the company due to his illness, and he has not been able to stay in any job for long since then.
Vishnu, once a competitive sprinter, now needs public assistance to pay for his high medical bills.
There are 6 people in their family, including Saivi and his wife, Vishnu, Vishnu's younger brother and grandparents.
Saiwei also said that before Vishnu fell ill, he had been selected to join the state track and field team. He participated in competitions from elementary school to middle school and won many medals and trophies, but the team was dropped due to his illness.
She was forced to put the trophies into the box to prevent her son from being saddened by the sight. Now 25, Vishnu hopes to return to the track and field and enter a sports school after recovering.
They hope that people in the community can donate generously to raise money for Vishnu's medicine.
