Covid in Delhi

Delhi has reported 23 new COVID-19 cases—the first notable spike in nearly three years. Health Minister Pankaj Singh said all patients are stable with mild, flu-like symptoms. He added that a special monitoring team has been formed and all hospitals have been asked to ensure bed, oxygen, and medicine availability.

Hospitals are also required to report daily COVID-19 data and send positive samples for genome sequencing.

Covid in Mumbai

Mumbai has recorded 95 COVID-19 cases so far in May, a steep rise compared to Maharashtra’s total of 106 since January. At least 16 patients have been hospitalised, and transfers from KEM to Seven Hills Hospital are underway to control the spread. Authorities have mandated testing for all SARI and ILI cases.

Covid in Bengaluru

In Karnataka, 32 of the 35 active cases are from Bengaluru. A nine-month-old baby has tested positive and is being treated at Vani Vilas Hospital. Health officials say cases have been rising steadily over the past 20 days and are urging the public to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour, especially high-risk groups.

Covid in Gurgaon

Haryana has reported four new Covid-19 cases, with two each in Gurgaon and Faridabad, all involving patients with no recent international travel history. The state's health minister, Arti Singh Rao, said the health department is monitoring the situation closely to ensure public safety and preparedness.

All four patients — two men and two women — have mild symptoms and are under home quarantine with regular medical supervision. The minister added that there is no cause for panic at this time.

No need to panic—but stay cautious

Doctors across cities say the current variant, likely a sub-variant of JN.1, is highly transmissible but causes mostly mild symptoms. Still, they recommend mask-wearing in crowded places, maintaining hygiene, and staying up to date with booster vaccinations.

With sporadic surges being seen across Gujarat, Kerala, Haryana and now major metros, the health departments are ramping up surveillance and readiness.

A new Covid variant behind a surge of hospitalizations in China has been detected in the US.

Latest CDC data shows the new NB.1.8.1 strain has been detected among international travelers arriving in California, Washington state, Virginia and New York City.

The patients came from nine countries — China, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, France, the Netherlands and Spain  — between April 22 and May 12.

The variant has also been detected in Hawaii, Rhode Island and Ohio. 

There is some alarm over the new variant which is potentially more infectious than the current dominant strains. 

In China, data shows the proportion of severely ill respiratory patients with Covid has jumped from 3.3 to 6.3 percent over the last month.

The proportion of Chinese ER patients testing positive for Covid had jumped from 7.5 to 16.2 percent.

Officials in Taiwan are also reporting a surge in Covid emergency room admissions, with the number rising 78 percent in a week over the seven-days to May 3, according to the latest data available.

And hospitalizations have risen to a 12-month high in Hong Kong, thought to be driven by the new variant. Officials are telling people to mask up as a result.

The variant has been circulating in the US since late March.

But there is no sign of a major uptick in cases at present — with the positivity rate of swabs detecting the virus falling 12 percent in the latest week data is available.

In this program, travelers at select airports can volunteer to self-collect two nasal swab samples and complete a short survey.

These swabs are then tested for a range of diseases of concern, including Covid. 

The travelers behind the cases of the new variant were tested between April 22 and May 12.

Experts are closely watching the new variant, which is already dominant in China and is on the rise in parts of Asia.

In Taiwan, there were 19,097 visits for Covid last week, the latest available — and the NB.1.8.1 variant has become dominant in the country. 

Early research from China suggests the NB.1.8.1 variant is better at binding to human cells, making it more infectious.

In a notice from Hong Kong released last week, officials again urged people to wear face masks in public places if they were at high risk from an infection.

And they urged the public to wear a face mask when traveling on public transportation or staying in crowded areas.

The FDA held a meeting Thursday on whether to update the Covid vaccines, where the strain came up multiple times.

Currently, the latest vaccines target the JN.1 variant and its descendants. Data currently suggests that the LP.8.1 variant is dominant in the US — which is a descendant of JN.1.

At the meeting, CDC and FDA officials told the panel that only one strain — called XFC — has been significantly growing in the US.

Woman tests positive for Covid in Visakhapatnam

 

VISAKHAPATNAM: A fresh Covid-19 positive case has been reported in Visakhapatnam on Thursday, health authorities confirmed. The patient, a 28-year-old woman from Pithapuram Colony, underwent testing after showing symptoms such as fever and cold. The test results confirmed a positive case of Covid-19.

District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Dr P Jagadeeswara Rao confirmed the case, stating, “Yes, a positive case has been registered, and the patient is currently doing well under medical supervision.”

He emphasised that there is no need for public panic as these are isolated cases. “Even in the last couple of years, we had a few isolated cases, but the situation remained under control. Currently, we are actively screening fever cases as a precautionary measure.”

Dr Rao also advised the public to continue following basic hygiene and safety protocols.

NASA issues alert: Eiffel Tower-sized asteroid to make 'close encounter' with Earth at 30,000 km/h this weekend

 

A colossal asteroid the size of a 100-storey building is barreling past Earth this weekend in a high-speed flyby that's captured the full attention of NASA's asteroid trackers. Named 387746 (2003 MH4), the space rock spans 335 metres and will zip past Earth at 4:07 PM IST on May 24, travelling at a blistering 30,060 km/h — fast enough to orbit the planet in just over an hour. NASA has classified the flyby as a “close encounter,” and though the asteroid poses no threat of collision, its immense size and speed have put scientists on alert.

Belonging to the Apollo group of asteroids — those with orbits that cross Earth’s path — 2003 MH4 will pass at a distance of 6.67 million kilometres, or about 17 times the Earth-Moon distance. That’s close enough to earn the "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" tag, given its size exceeds 140 metres and it comes within the 7.5 million kilometre threshold.

The concern isn’t this flyby, but what future trajectories might hold. Even minor gravitational nudges from planets or subtle forces like the Yarkovsky effect, where sunlight slowly alters an asteroid’s path, could redirect such objects over time. “This weekend’s sighting is a warning, not a threat,” stated NASA’s Centre for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS).

Just days earlier, on May 21, a smaller asteroid named 2025 KF made an even closer pass — just 111,000 kilometres from Earth, or less than a third of the distance to the Moon. Discovered only this year, the 23-metre-wide rock drew comparisons to a stack of twelve and a half gorillas in height, according to a whimsical WWF-based analogy.

Despite its size, 2025 KF is being treated seriously. Many space rocks are not solid but “rubble piles” — loose clusters of debris held together by gravity, which can shift or disintegrate under planetary influence. “If one of these rocks ever hit Earth, the destruction would be enormous,” experts warn. The impact could rival thousands of nuclear bombs, unleashing fires, tsunamis, and seismic shocks, followed by dust clouds that might block sunlight and trigger a so-called “impact winter.”

CNEOS and other observatories continue to scan the skies, not only to detect new threats early but also to develop strategies for deflecting or destroying them if needed. For now, this flyby is a cosmic near-miss — and a potent reminder that in space, safety is never guaranteed.

Zero active COVID-19 cases in Vijayawada Andhra Pradesh

 

VIJAYAWADA: The Health, Medical, and Family Welfare Department has confirmed that Andhra Pradesh has no active COVID-19 cases, even as neighbouring states experience a resurgence.

As of May 19, India has recorded 257 COVID-19 cases, with Kerala reporting 95, Tamil Nadu 66, Maharashtra 55, Karnataka 13, and Puducherry 10. However, the Health Department has urged citizens to remain cautious. Common symptoms include fever, cough, cold, and sore throat, and individuals experiencing them should seek medical attention.

Travellers from affected regions are advised to get tested and self-isolate for at least a week if symptomatic. Masks have been made mandatory on public transport and in crowded spaces like shopping malls, cinemas, places of worship, and markets.

A special advisory has been issued for vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, children below five years, senior citizens, and individuals with chronic illnesses. They are encouraged to limit travel and follow strict hygiene practices.

The State government continues to stress preventive measures and urges public cooperation to maintain its safety record.

Covid Cases in India: Several states, including Kerala, and Odisha witnessed a resurge in Covid-19 cases in the last few days amid the global rise in Coronavirus infections. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Government of India website, 257 Covid cases are active as of May 19, 2025.

 

Kerala Covid Cases

As many as 182 Covid-19 cases have been reported in Kerala in May so far, state Health Minister Veena George said on Wednesday. The highest number of cases was reported in Kottayam district (57), while 34 and 30 cases were reported in Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram, respectively, during the period, she said after chairing a meeting of the state-level Rapid Response Team (RRT).

George urged people to be vigilant, as there is a possibility of an increase in Covid cases in Kerala as well, as large numbers of the infection are being reported in Southeast Asian countries.

Severity Is Not That High: Kerala Minister

The Omicron JN.1 variants, LF.7 and NB 1.8, which are spreading in these countries, have a higher potential for disease transmission, but the severity is not that high, she noted in a statement.

Stressing the significance of self-protection, the minister said those with symptoms such as a cold, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath must wear a mask.

What Are the Government's Advises?

It is advisable for the elderly, pregnant women, and those with serious illnesses to wear masks in public places and while travelling, she said, adding that masks are mandatory while visiting hospitals.

Instructions have been issued to conduct Covid tests for those coming to hospitals with symptoms in the state. Directions have also been issued to ensure RTPCR kits and other safety equipment are there, the statement further said.

Fresh Covid-19 Case Detected In Odisha after 2 Years

A fresh Covid-19 case has been detected in Odisha after a gap of two-and-a-half years, and the condition of the patient is stable, a senior government official said here on Thursday.

Health and Family Welfare Secretary S Aswathy said, "The patient is stable at present but the only concern is that the infected person has several comorbid conditions."

Two Covid-19-Linked Deaths In Maharashtra Since January

Maharashtra has reported two Covid-19-related deaths since January this year, the state health department said on Tuesday. In a release, the department said both fatalities were reported from Mumbai and involved patients with comorbidities (simultaneous presence of two or more medical conditions in a person).

One of the deceased had nephrotic syndrome with hypocalcemia seizure, while the other was a cancer patient, it said.

Booster Shots Crucial For High-Risk People, Waning Immunity Fuels COVID-19 Surge: AIIMS Professor

Booster doses may not be urgently needed for the general population, but they are crucial for the elderly and medically vulnerable, as waning immunity emerges as a key driver behind the latest global COVID-19 surge, Dr Piyush Ranjan, professor at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), told News18.

 

 

As several parts of Asia grapple with a fresh surge of COVID-19 cases, India stands relatively unshaken. Countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, and China have witnessed a sharp rise in infections driven by the highly transmissible Omicron subvariants LF.7 and NB.1.8.

“Despite the latest virus’s enhanced ability to spread, India’s COVID-19 situation remains stable, with only a mild uptick in cases reported as of mid-May,” said Ranjan, a professor, Department of Medicine, AIIMS New Delhi.

Ranjan – who has published various studies in peer reviewed journals to assess the impact of Covid-19 – believes that booster doses, particularly those targeting Omicron-related variants remain effective in reducing severe disease, hospitalisation, and death, though they are less effective against mild or asymptomatic infections.

“Given the mild nature of current cases and the absence of a significant surge in India, booster doses for the general population are not urgently necessary but should be encouraged for those who have not received a booster in over a year, as waning immunity is a key driver of current surges,” Ranjan said. “Updated monovalent vaccines targeting JN.1 or closely related strains are expected to offer protection against severe disease caused by LF.7 and NB.1.8,” he added.

 

 

Global versus India

According to Ranjan’s analysis, in Singapore, ICU admissions have slightly declined, which is an encouraging sign that while more people are falling ill, most are not experiencing severe disease. “The common denominator in these regions is the rapid spread of LF.7 and NB.1.8, subvariants descended from JN.1, which in turn emerged from the BA.2.86 lineage of Omicron,” he said.

These subvariants, he said, carry mutations that allow them to evade immunity more effectively, leading to increased transmission – even among those previously infected or vaccinated. “However, while their spread is swift, the symptoms remain largely mild: sore throat, low-grade fever, fatigue, and occasionally nausea or diarrhoea,” Ranjan said.

India’s numbers tell a calmer story, he said, based on the May 19 data, which recorded just 257 active COVID-19 cases nationwide, primarily concentrated in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. Unlike the sharp spikes observed abroad, India’s increase has been described as “under control.” “Most patients have reported only mild symptoms and have recovered at home without the need for hospitalisation or advanced medical care.”

 

 

Ranjan attributes India’s resilience to several factors, saying, “Widespread prior exposure to the virus, extensive vaccination coverage, and ongoing public health monitoring are the main reasons. However, there is a caution against complacency, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.”

Globally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has categorised LF.7 and NB.1.8 as Variants Under Monitoring, not Variants of Concern, underscoring that while these subvariants warrant attention, they do not currently pose a significant global health threat.

Be cautious, not fearful

To avoid unnecessary alarm while maintaining readiness, he believes in educating the public about mild symptoms instead of imposing “blanket restrictions that could spark panic.” “Focus on educating the public about mild symptoms, the effectiveness of vaccines, and the importance of protecting vulnerable groups. Use trusted channels to counter misinformation,” he said.

“Encourage voluntary measures like mask-wearing in crowded indoor settings, hand hygiene, and respiratory etiquette, particularly during travel or large gatherings,” he said while adding that the government “must avoid mandatory restrictions unless severe cases rise significantly,” he added.

As the virus continues to evolve, he believes, the government must ensure that hospitals are prepared for potential localised increases in admissions, particularly in states like Kerala and Maharashtra, without overhyping the risk.

“India’s current low case load suggests existing capacity is sufficient. These measures align with the current mild nature of the surge and the effectiveness of existing vaccines, focusing on protecting the vulnerable while maintaining normalcy,” Ranjan said.

“The public is urged to remain cautious but not fearful,” he said while adding that “India’s robust surveillance and vaccination infrastructure provide a strong foundation to manage this wave without alarmist responses.”

Odisha logs fresh COVID-19 case after 2-and-a-half years

 

Odisha has logged a fresh COVID-19 infection after a two-and-a-half year’s hiatus with a patient diagnosed with the virus in a Bhubaneswar-based private hospital.

The health condition of the patient is stable and the patient is undergoing treatment at a private hospital here, said an official of the state’s health department appealing to the people not to panic.

As per the COVID dashboard of the Odisha Government, 26 cases were detected in the state on November 8, 2022.

Responding to media queries, Health and Family Welfare Department’s Secretary Aswathy S advised people “not to panic about the sporadic appearance of covid cases in the state of Odisha”.

The state government is maintaining strict vigil, and closely monitoring the situation. The government machinery is in all alertness for countering any form of emergency, she said.

Sporadic and singular cases of COVID are continuously being detected in various parts of the country since the fall of pandemic’s peak in 2020-21. Since then, the disease is well controlled and contained in Odisha. Rollout of free vaccines, mass vaccination coupled with continued government efforts reduced the spread and burden of the disease to a great extent in Odisha, health secretary Aswathy further said.

The sporadic cases are continuous phenomena, and those are managed as per the established protocols as and when they arise. As per National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and World Health Organisation (WHO) indicators, these sporadic cases are of “mild variety of known pre-existing strains”. They do not cause any grave disease. NCDC or WHO has not issued any new additional advisory with regard to sporadic cases. Still the health department is in all readiness to deal with the cases as and when they are detected, the Health Secretary concluded.
